Tomatoes - On the Vine Facts

One medium whole tomato (salad varieties) contains around 22 calories and provides approximately 40 percent of the recommended daily allowance of vitamin C, 20 percent of the RDA of vitamin A, 2 percent of the RDA of iron, and 1 percent of the RDA of calcium. Tomatoes are a nutritious fruit although most commonly used as a vegetable. They have excellent phyto-chemical properties and interestingly have more health-benefiting properties than that in an apple! Botanically, tomatoes belong to the Solanaceae family that also includes chilli peppers, potato and aubergine. Tomatoes originate from Central America, cultivated by the Aztecs for centuries before the Spanish explorers introduced it to Europe – and the rest of the world. Tomatoes have good antioxidant content with a rich concentration of lycopene. Research has shown an important connection between lycopene, its antioxidant properties, and bone health.  Fresh tomatoes have also been shown to help lower total cholesterol.
